“A
STYLIZED INTENSITY BRINGING LYRICS TO LIFE MUCH AS AN ACTOR DOES
WITH A GOOD SCRIPT”... “SINGING POWERFULLY WITH FEELING
– TAKING LIBERTIES WITH TIMING FOR EMPHASIS”... “AN
UNUSUAL QUALITY TO HIS VOICE – A SMOOTH SMOKINESS THAT IS
PARTICULARLY FORCEFUL AND PLEASING.”
---Jazz Review: The American Rag/March 2005
Above
are excerpts from L.A. Jazz Scene’s Harvey Barkan and his
review of the debut performance of Jazz Vocalist DAVID HALL at Geri’s
Jazz World in Hollywood, California on October 11, 2004. The SRO
crowd present that evening and their extremely enthusiastic response
to each and every musical selection served up by the singer &
his quartet (Dick Shreve/Piano, Ron Anthony/Guitar, Chuck Berghofer/Bass,
Brian Newbury/Drums), generated a return-engeagement offer before
the first set had been completed.
Hailed
as “A JAZZ VOCALIST WHO USES HIS VOICE THE WAY LESTER YOUNG USED HIS SAXOPHONE” and “POSSESSING
A RARE IN-PERSON PRESENCE THAT INFUSES FEEL & NUANCE INTO ALL
HIS UP-TEMPO TUNES” and “SINGING BALLADS HE ESTABLISHES
SUCH REMARKABLE, MOODY CONTACT WITH HIS MATERIAL THAT HE HOLDS HIS
LISTENERS SOMEWHAT SPELLBOUND” – this is clearly a performer
to keep an eye on.
Gigs at local venues include: The Jazz Masters Series @ Four Points Sheraton (LAX), Geri's Jazz World (Studio City), Back Room @ Henri's (Canoga Park), Ramsey's @ The Club (Toluca Lake), and an evening at The Gardenia (West Hollywood) with Frank Strazzeri (piano), and Harvey Newmark (bass).
